Why is Subaru discontinuing WRX STI?

Subaru made a prominent announcement on March 11th, 2022, with regards to the production of the WRX STI. Subaru didn't clearly explain why they were discontinuing WRX STI's production. Instead, they stated that the next generation of the WRX STI’s internal combustion car engineI won't be produced using the newly introduced WRX platform, hence discontinuing WRX STI.

However, what’s the main reason why Subaru is discontinuing the WRX STI?

Vehicle Fuel Economy and Industry Emissions Regulations

Subaru is using a new global platform when developing the new 2022 models. To meet the current regulations in the global auto industry regarding fuel economy and emissions, Subaru is embracing electrification of most of its new models.

Subaru intends on meeting the regulations and standards of the ZEV (zero-emission cars), CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy), and GHG (greenhouse gasses). The company, therefore, doesn’t plan on continuing with the production of the gas-powered WRX STI model from Subaru. Even though the statement stated the fifth generation internal combustion car engine of the WRX STI won’t be produced using the new WRX platform from Subaru, it doesn’t affect the production of the WRX models.

The 4th Generation WRX STI

The last production of the WRX STI was under the 2021 WRX and WRX STI. Fans of the high-performing sedan were disappointed by the news. The 2021 WRX STI had an electronic Driver Controlled Centre Differential that improved cornering capability and response. It also features sporty interior accents and aggressive exterior styling, providing everyday comfort, safety, cargo space, and versatility.

The last production of the WRX STI, which is the 2021 WRX STI, had a starting price of $40,395. The WRX STI was available in four trim levels: WRX STI, Sport, Sport-tech (Wing Spoiler), and Sport-tech (Lip Spoiler). So, what’s the main reason why Subaru is discontinuing the WRX STI?

2021 WRX STI Performance and Fuel Economy

The 2021 WRX STI features a turbocharged 2.5 litres four-cylinder SUBARU BOXER. The engine has a high-efficiency intercooler and horizontally opposed configuration that operates smoothly. Additionally, the engine is equipped with the Dual Active Valve Control System and meets the LEV II (Low Emission Vehicle) standards. The 2021 WRX STI has a close-ratio manual transmission (6MT) and the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system. Buyers get 310 hp at 6,000 RPM and 290 lb-ft at 4,000 RPM torque.

Next Generation of the WRX STI from Subaru

Subaru hasn’t given an affirmative statement on whether the next generation of the WRX STI will be an all-electric vehicle. The fifth generation of the WRX STI is expected to be released this year. Subaru has already released its first all-electric SUV, the 2022 Subaru Solterra SUV. The SUV features both all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive equipped with 71.4kWh batteries.

Final Thoughts

While many WRX and WRX STI fans are disappointed about the sudden stop to its production, there’s still hope. Subaru announced that it plans on incorporating some of the critical features of the STI into future generation Subaru cars. Even if the Japanese maker doesn't resume the production of the WRX STI models, you can still get some of the key features on the future generation models.
