Subaru Models Shine in 2024 IIHS Safety Awards

Subaru Canada, Inc. is proud to announce exceptional results from the 2024 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) safety evaluations. This year, four of Subaru's models have distinguished themselves in the rigorous testing process, showcasing the brand's dedication to vehicle safety. The Ascent, Subaru's versatile SUV, has achieved the coveted TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) award. Meanwhile, the Impreza, Outback, and Solterra have each been honored with a TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP) designation.

The IIHS has introduced more stringent criteria for this year's evaluations, including a revised pedestrian front crash prevention test. This test now combines what used to be separate daytime and nighttime evaluations into a single comprehensive assessment, raising the bar for vehicles to qualify for these prestigious awards.

Perhaps the most significant change in this year's testing protocol is the updated moderate front overlap test. To meet the TSP+ criteria, vehicles must now secure an acceptable or good rating in this more demanding test, which focuses on the protection of both the driver and the rear passenger. The introduction of a second dummy, positioned behind the driver, emphasizes the importance of rear seat safety in frontal collisions.

Furthermore, to qualify for either the TSP or TSP+ award, vehicles must demonstrate good protection in the small overlap front crash scenario. This test simulates a collision where 25% of the vehicle's front end, on either side, impacts another vehicle or a stationary object. For the first time, the IIHS has combined the driver-side and passenger-side evaluations into a single rating, with the final score reflecting the lower of the two results. Additionally, all qualifying vehicles must come equipped with good or acceptable headlights across all trim levels, ensuring visibility and safety during nighttime driving.

The Ascent's achievement of a TSP or higher for seven consecutive years, the Outback's sixteenth consecutive TSP, and the Impreza's seventeenth are testaments to Subaru's enduring commitment to safety. The all-electric Solterra also continues to impress, securing its second TSP in just its second model year.

As of February 2024, Subaru leads the industry with a total of 71 TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards since 2013, more than any other brand. This achievement highlights Subaru's consistent focus on safety innovations and their effective implementation across the brand's diverse model range.
