Subaru Canada Announces Exclusive 2020 WRX STI Kanrai Edition

Subaru has a history of releasing souped-up special editions of its models with strictly limited production runs. True to form, the company has recently announced the 2020 WRX STI Kanrai Edition, consisting of just 75 units in total and exclusive to Canada.

Kanrai translates to 'winter thunder', and the model is certainly stirring up a storm of excitement among high-performance sedan enthusiasts. Available from early spring 2020, and priced starting at $50,395, it promises to be an exciting addition to the Subaru range, however short-lived its availability will be.

Based on the WRX STI Sport-Tech, the Kanrai edition features unique enhancements in design, handling, and braking to take excitement and drivability to new heights. Here's what to expect from the Kanrai - if you can get your hands on one.

Performance and Powertrain

At the heart of the Kanrai is a 2.5L Subaru Boxer high-pressure turbo engine, pushing out 310 horsepower and 290lb-ft of torque. While this is the same engine configuration as the Sport-Tech, numerous enhancements move the performance up a level.

To start with, there's a specially modified six-speed close-ratio manual transmission, providing a close-control, hands-on driving experience. The transmission links to the all-wheel drive, which is supported by performance-tuned suspension from Bilstein to provide excellent driving dynamics.

Lastly, safe handling is assured by Brembo 6-pot front and 2-pot rear high-performance brakes, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 ultra-high-performance summer tires, and limited-slip front and rear differential.

Styling and Appearance

But it's not just under the hood that's been upgraded. All 75 cars are finished with an exclusive Ceramic White exterior paint, paired with matt black exterior accents including low-profile spoilers, badging, door mirrors, and roof antenna.

The 19" BBS forged aluminum wheels have a bronze painted finish, complete with silver painted brake calipers for that extra touch of dynamism. And for a final flourish, the Kanrai is fronted off by an exclusive black grille with a cherry red accent.

Interior and Infotainment

The Kanrai's sedan format limits the internal space a little compared to a more practical hatchback format. However, it's fair to say that this isn't a car aimed at family errand driving, so a slightly cramped rear interior may be a moot point to most.

However, when it comes to tech the Kanrai maintains the high standards it reaches in other areas. The 7-inch high-resolution touchscreen controls the GPS navigation and multimedia functions, complete with smartphone integration and dual USB ports.

Audio controls are both illuminated and steering-wheel integrated, and the radio, CD, mp3, and streaming audio is sent to a high-end Harmon Kardon system boasting nine speakers and a sub-woofer.

Lastly, essential driving information is conveyed by a customizable 5.9-inch multi-function display, providing fuel data, a vehicle dynamics monitor, maintenance reminders, and more.
