2026 Subaru Outback unveiled as a world premiere
April 23 2025,
Subaru unveiled the all-new 2026 Outback at the 2025 New York International Auto Show. This seventh-generation model marks an important milestone for the automaker, as the vehicle celebrates 30 years on the market. True to its utilitarian and adventurous vocation, the new Outback is thoroughly renewed, both inside and out, while incorporating advanced technologies focused on safety, comfort and connectivity.
A robust, functional design
The silhouette of the 2026 Outback retains the model's iconic proportions, while adopting a higher, more assertive profile. A new, wider grille, redesigned headlamps and scratch-resistant rocker panels give it a more adventurous look. Roof racks with integrated anchoring points make transporting equipment a breeze. At the rear, a sloping rear window and new lighting enhance the impression of width and stability, while the tailgate provides easy access to a larger trunk.
A modern, spacious interior
The interior of the new Outback has been redesigned with simplicity and comfort in mind. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.1-inch central touchscreen are now standard on all versions. Subaru is also introducing a new, more intuitive interface with cloud-based voice control, in addition to wireless compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The quality of materials has been reviewed, with the addition of recycled elements, notably in the ceiling. In addition, the redesigned seats offer better support for long journeys, while sound insulation has been improved for a quieter environment.
Enhanced safety technologies
All versions of the 2026 Outback feature the latest generation of the EyeSight system. This includes functions such as pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and new hands-free assistance on freeways, up to 135 km/h. Some versions also feature emergency stop assistance, with safe lane change in the event of driver inaction. Three front cameras and radar sensors enhance the system's effectiveness in different conditions.
Engines and performance
Two engine options are available: a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated engine developing 180 hp, and a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine delivering 260 hp, reserved for XT and Wilderness versions. These engines are mated to an eight-speed manual-mode CVT transmission and Subaru's symmetrical constant-mesh all-wheel drive system. The X-MODE system has also been redesigned for improved off-road response.
The Wilderness version in the spotlight
The 2026 Outback Wilderness features increased ground clearance (241 mm), adaptive electronic suspension and off-road tires mounted on exclusive wheels. It also offers improved approach and departure angles, a towing capacity of 3,500 lb, and even bolder styling, with copper accents and reinforced protective elements. The interior features easy-to-clean, water-resistant materials and practical storage hooks in the cargo area.
With the 2026 Outback, Subaru offers a welcome evolution of its iconic SUV. More technological, safer and as versatile as ever, this new generation is sure to meet the needs of Quebec drivers, whether they're looking for a wilderness getaway or a daily commute. First deliveries are scheduled for late 2025, while the Wilderness version will arrive in early 2026.
