2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness features and specs

The Subaru Outback is one of the most versatile three-row SUVs available today, combining family comfort and economy with genuine off-road ability. However, the model fell slightly short of the full hardcore rock-crawling ability that committed off-road devotees demand from their vehicles.

The 2022 Outback Wilderness is set to change all that, by adding a slew of trail-friendly features to take the model to a new level of off-road readiness. The new model is now available for a test drive at our Subaru dealership in Toronto, and here are the vital highlights you can look forward to enjoying.

Beefed Up Exterior and Design

The Outback already occupies the chunkier end of the SUV design spectrum, with a strong profile that inspires confidence in its power and stability. However, the Wilderness takes the approach even further, with increased ride height, better ground clearance, and extra cladding to handle tougher terrains with ease.

Powertrain and Performance

The Wilderness is based around the high-end Subaru 2.4L turbo gas engine making an exceptionally healthy 260 horsepower and 277lb-ft of torque, feeding all-wheel drive as standard through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with gear ratios optimized for off-road activity. The result is a powertrain that can propel the sizable bulk of the Wilderness from 0-100kmh in just 5.8 seconds, an impressive acceleration figure by anyone's standards.

Subaru X-Mode

However, the ride quality is taken to new levels with the addition of an advanced version of the Subaru X-Mode system. This technology continually modifies throttle response and torque distribution to drive all four wheels independently, giving the best possible grip and stability over a wide range of conditions.

Off-Road Specialties

Subaru has also made several upgrades and additions to the basic Outback to develop its off-road specialties even further. A 2cm suspension lift boosts the ground clearance to an impressive 24cm, while thicker all-terrain tires are mounted on slightly smaller wheels to enhance grip while maintaining the same level of wading ability. The body is now 4cm wider to give a lower centre of gravity, while approach and departure angles have both been raised by a tenth. All this combines to make the Wilderness entirely at home on gradients of up to 40 degrees.

Interior, Infotainment, and Technology

But while the Wilderness's focus is firmly on the off-road experience, the interior is surprisingly comfortable and boasts plenty of advanced technology. A large 11.6" touchscreen is mounted in portrait mode for easy accessibility, with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay delivering smart device integration.

And lastly, the Wilderness is equipped with Subaru's generous suite of active safety and driver-assist technology with standard features including lane centring assist, forward and reverse automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, and much more.
