2021 Subaru Outback vs. 2021 Toyota RAV4: The Outback is Your Tool for Adventure

The Subaru Outback reinvents itself for the next generation with a recent set of updates. It features more power and capability while making it one of the most versatile SUVs in production. Outstanding AWD takes on virtually any road or path, and it includes dimensions that make it easy to pack up and go.

Here, we compare the Outback to the 2021 Toyota RAV4.

The 2021 Subaru Outback is all about versatility

An observer doesn't have to do much research in discovering one of the Outback's biggest strengths over the RAV4: versatility. With a lower roof combined with higher ground clearance than the RAV4, the Outback makes roof loading easy without sacrificing trail capability.

At first glance, the Outback appears smaller, but looks are deceiving. As a matter of fact, the Outback features significantly more cargo capacity than the RAV4. Each model in the lineup includes up to 2,144 litres of volume compared to the RAV4's 1,977 litres. Add in the Outback's roof capacity, and you have a true lifestyle vehicle that is ready for any adventure.

The 2021 Subaru Outback has turbocharged power

The Outback also features two powertrains that deliver durable power and torque to all wheels. Four grades include a 2.5L four-cylinder SUBARU BOXER engine that outputs 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. That is plenty for adventure seekers, but if you want even more output, the XT grades go to another level. Each XT includes a turbocharged engine that provides 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. This creates an entirely new experience for the road and trail.

The RAV4 offers a gas model with slightly more horsepower and torque than the non-turbo Outback. However, the turbo Outback outperforms all RAV4 models except the most expensive model in this comparison--the RAV4 Prime. But what you won’t get with the RAV4 is Subaru’s renowned symmetrical AWD system that outranks the RAV4’s capabilities.

The Outback also has specialized road/trail controls, including Standard X-Mode with Hill Descent Control to dial in the road beneath, which makes it a much more capable adventure vehicle than the RAV4.
