2021 Subaru Impreza Named the Most Affordable All-Wheel Drive Vehicle on the Market

All-wheel drive is becoming an increasingly popular option for today's car models, whether they're family-oriented compacts for city driving or rugged SUVs for off-road adventuring. However, AWD has traditionally been seen as a perk and not a standard-essential.

Subaru was one of the first carmakers to introduce four-wheel drive as a standard option across their range, and their continuing policy has seen them provide what's officially the most affordable way of driving a new AWD vehicle in Canada.

The 2021 Subaru Impreza has a starting price of just $19,995 for the sedan version, which not only comes in at under the magic $20k mark but also offers a huge number of features for an attractive price. What do savvy 2021 Impreza buyers get for their money?

Impressive Safety Features

Apart from the all-wheel drive, one of the highlights of the 2021 Subaru Impreza is the inclusion of the excellent EyeSight safety package on nearly every trim in the range.

The only exception is the base-level trim with the manual gearbox option, where EyeSight is unavailable due to it relying on Subaru's Lineartronic automatic transmission system.

  • Highlights of the package include:
  • Pre-collision throttle management for collision mitigation.
  • Automatic forward emergency braking.
  • Lane-keeping assist and lane departure warnings.
  • Sway warnings.
  • Adaptive cruise control.

Plenty of other cars have a similar suite of active systems, but few have so many as standard at the low price of the Impreza. And as you rise up the trims, even more, features become available, including blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alerts, and a side vehicle detection system.

Subaru Starlink

What's more, most Impreza models also feature Subaru's Starlink system which comprises several useful connected services. Owners can use their smartphone to remotely lock and unlock the car, start the engine, adjust the climate control, and locate their vehicle in busy parking lots.

Additionally, Starlink will also automatically alert the authorities when a collision is detected, and also comes with full roadside and emergency SOS assistance as standard.

Under the Hood

Whether you choose the sedan or the five-door hatchback, the powertrain remains the same. Based around a 2.0L 4-cylinder Boxer engine making 152 horsepower and 145lb-ft of torque, the Impreza delivers an attractive combination of responsive handling with impressive fuel economy.

Paired with the standard CVT gearbox, the Subaru can deliver consumption as low as 7.5L / 100km on the highway, which is a highly respectable figure for an all-wheel-drive model.

Interior Technology

All trims of the 2021 Impreza are equipped with an infotainment touchscreen ranging from 6" to 8" in size, with every model offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

Air conditioning, power windows, and power side windows are standard, while higher trims add luxurious touches from heated seats and steering wheel to a premium eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
