2020 Subaru Legacy | Price, Features and Performance

In a market that's increasingly dominated by crossover SUVs, the Subaru Legacy offers something a little different. As a mid-sized sedan seating five passengers, it's aimed directly at families who value economy and comfort over size and convention.

The 2020 Legacy is the latest refresh of the model's seventh generation. On the surface, not much has changed since last year, with the styling and overall approach of the car familiar from earlier Legacy versions.

But dig a little deeper, and there are plenty of updated options to look at. Read our 2020 Subaru Legacy review to find out what you need to know.

Engine and Performance

From the base trim upward, the standard engine is a 2.5L 4-cylinder Subaru Boxer model, producing 182 horsepower at 5,800rpm and 176 lb-ft of torque at 4,400rpm. Higher trims can benefit from a 2.4L turbocharged option, generating 260 horsepower at 5,600rpm and 277 lb-ft torque at 2,000-4,800rpm.

On all trims, power is fed through a continuously variable transmission, incorporating Subaru's Lineartronic system which mimics the stepped behaviour of a conventional 8-speed automatic. As with all Subaru models, all-wheel drive with active torque vectoring is a standard feature.

Despite the relatively large engine size and very respectable horsepower rating, the base-level Legacy offers excellent fuel economy figures of 8.8L / 100km for city driving, with 6.7L / 100km on the highway.

Safety Features

Perhaps the most important safety feature on the Legacy is the all-new Subaru Global Platform construction method, which will be used for all future Subaru models. Among other benefits, the structure is calculated to absorb 40% more impact energy in a collision, helping to keep passengers safer.

Other safety features include:

  • Automatic cruise control.
  • Pre-collision braking system.
  • Lane keeping system.
  • DriverFocus technology to detect driver drowsiness or distraction, and sound an alert.
  • Collision detection with automatic emergency services notification (via the Starlink option).

There's also a full set of front, side, and curtain airbags with occupant detection system, a rear view camera, and an impact-absorbing driver footrest.

Interior Features

The 2020 version of the Legacy enjoys a redesigned interior, incorporating many useful features along with a comfortable trim that offers surprising luxury for this class. Comfort and convenience features include:

  • Dual 7" touchscreens as standard, with optional single 11.6" fully programmable touchscreen upgrade.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
  • Bluetooth connectivity and Bluetooth streaming audio.
  • Automatic climate control.
  • Rear seat USB ports.

Price Range

For a car with such a range of technology and performance features, the Legacy offers great value for money. The starting price for the base Legacy Convenience model is $29,014, while the top-level Premier GT Turbo trims clocks in at $41,714.

If you're in the market for a family car that bucks the seemingly unstoppable trend towards SUVs, the Legacy sedan is an impressive choice. It offers great fuel economy, high performance, and plenty of tech and convenience features at an attractive price.
