2020 Subaru Forester vs Mazda CX-5

The popular Forester brings outstanding functionality and all-season performance to Canada with the best AWD system in the business, enhanced styling and undeniable reliability. Here, we compare it to the 2020 Mazda CX-5.

The 2020 Subaru Forester has a more efficient and intelligent drivetrain

Each Forester includes a horizontally opposed, 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. It produces a solid 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. Most CX-5 trims also have a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that generates a slightly higher 187 horsepower. Two of the CX-5’s highest grade trims include a more powerful turbocharged engine, but the exorbitant price range reflects it. Both Mazda engines have their trade-offs, and when we talk efficiency, those few little additional horses under the hood will cost you a lot at the pump.

The Forester lineup features a continuously variable transmission that adds efficiency and intelligent performance. Every Forester also includes Subaru’s legendary AWD system. You’ll have to buy higher grades to access AWD on the Mazda. CX-5 owners are also stuck with a six-speed automatic transmission that is less efficient and doesn’t have the terrain versatility of the CVT.

Each Subaru Forester model is more fuel efficient than any trim in the Mazda CX-5 lineup. With an efficiency rating of 9.0 L/100 km in the city and 7.2 L/100 km on the highway, it beats the CX-5’s most efficient model at 9.3 L/100 km in the city and 7.6 L/100 km on the highway—and that only includes FWD trims. All-wheel drive trims are even less efficient, attaining 9.8/7.9 L/100 km.

The 2020 Subaru Forester is designed for versatility

Every SUV should be versatile. If not, why even purchase one? The Forester places an emphasis on versatility with significant cargo volume. Behind the front seats, the Forester has 2008 litres of configurable space, which is plenty for vacations, camping, shopping, pets and more. The CX-5 doesn’t match up with 1,688 of available liters.

When it comes to occupant volume, the Forester’s measurements are in a class by itself. It has more front head and shoulder room than the CX-5, but it also has 1,100 mm of front leg room, which adds up to nearly 60 mm more than what the CX-5 offers. Rear Forester passengers also enjoy 61 more mm of shoulder room when compared to the competition.
